Activities To Encourage First Words

Article brought to you by InfantsBabiesToddlers.com

Teaching your baby to talk need not be a scarey venture into the unknown.  You can make it fun and educational by turning everything into a game.

You've probably already been teaching your baby communication without even knowing it. Hands up everyone who has taught their baby to wave bye bye? See?

Below are a selection of activites that will encourage communication and speech development.  Enjoy!

1. Point out body parts and name them.  For younger babies, make it easier for them by touching them with your finger as you name the part.  Older babies may benefit by pointing to their body part as you ask for a particular one.

2. Play hide and seek.  Get your baby to hide and repeatedly say "Where are you?"  or you could hide his favourite bear and repeat "where is bear?"

3. Bubble fun!  Teach your child how to blow bubbles with store bought or home made bubble mixture.  Not only is this fun but it also encourages speech development by teaching them to form their mouths in different shapes to blow (like you have to do when talking!).

4. Knock 'em down, blocks! Most of us have stacking blocks to build with our babies.  If not, use empty kleenex boxes.  When building, repeat "up, up, up, up!", then simply knock them over and say "down, down, down!"  Sounds basic doesn't it?  It's all about repetition.

5. Copy cats.  This is a simple game to play.  Just say to your baby a particular sound and encourage him to repeat it.  Example, say "Oooo" several times, until he gets the hint that he should say it too.  When he says it back a few times, make a happy fuss, then move on to another sound.  Make it as easy or as difficult as your baby likes.

6. Lots of books! Read to your baby on a daily basis.  It's great to snuggle together and read.
