Wrapping
and Swaddling.
Article

There is a general move in the medical and
nursing community back to swaddling newborn babies.
Wrapping or swaddling usually continues until baby is about 6 months
old, but can be done until baby is 12 months old if required.
If you give it some thought, it makes sense that a baby that has spent
its first few months of its life tightly constrained inside
the womb, would likely feel more comfotable once born to still
be somewhat constrained during rest time.
Another important point is that babies are all born with a "Startle
Reflex". This is a reflex action that they have no control over, that
causes them to extend both arms and legs abruptly when stirring in
their sleep. This reflex will often give baby a fright and cause them
to wake up completely and start crying despite needing more sleep.
A swaddle or Wrap solves that problem by containing baby's arms and
legs during the startle reflex, allowing them to continue sleeping
peacefully.
Swaddling may also help in the fight against SIDS because a wrapped
baby is less able to roll over onto her tummy.
Swaddling and Wrapping baby is usually done with a large 4ft X4ft or 5
X 5ft muslin or losely woven cotton cloth. There are many methods to
wrap a baby. The important points are to leave enough room for baby to
breathe properly, and ensure that there are no restrictions around the
baby's neck.
Baby needs to be swaddled firmly enough to stop them wriggling their
arms and legs free.
In very hot weather conditions, babies are often half-swaddled,
containing their arms, but leaving their legs out to allow baby to stay
cool.
Swaddling takes a bit of practice but its well worth doing, often
resulting in more restful sleep for you and baby. Most early childhood
nurses will be able to demostrate an effective wrapping technique.
