Encourage Your Baby To Talk

Article brought to you by InfantsBabiesToddlers.com

In your baby's first year, his only way of communcating with you is with his cry.  But as you've probably found out, he has different cries for different things such as pain, tiredness, hunger and boredom.  And depending on how much your baby cries, you may well be wishing he'd start talking sooner!

You can encourage early talking in your baby by just doing a few simple things daily.

Talk to your baby! You've probably already noticed how he listens intently to you. Take advantage of this phase and chat away at him about anything.  It doesn't matter what you talk about...he'll think you're absolutely fascinating even if your explaining the role that toilet paper plays in our lives! Believe it or not, you can even turn the chore of washing into a language lesson for your child. Tell your baby what you are doing by simply repeating common words in short sentences and he will soon make the association between the sound and the action or object.  For example:

"We're hanging out washing"
"Look at the clean washing"
"The washing is wet"
"Soon the washing will be dry"

Another way to encourage an early talker, is to point out things all around you and say their name.  For example, a dog may be very ho-hum boring to you, but your baby may never have seen a dog before!  Let him know what it is!  Remember that everything around you, your baby is experiencing for the first time.   So point out and describe everything...flowers, trees, people, cars...everything!

Want a talkative, articualte child?  Read to him!  Read, read, read, read!  It is never too early to start to read to your child. When your baby is quite young, he doesn't care what you read to him, just as long as your voice is animated.  Obviously, when he becomes more interactive, choose simple books with few words.  Apart from developing speech, it's a great time to bond.

Copy his babbling noises.  By copying him and encouraging him to make the noise again, you are in fact teaching him to deliberately make a particular sound...the beginning of talking!  Make a game of it, make it fun.  Have a conversation together in babble!
